Dan Donahue of Good Karma Vapor on Broadway in Fair Lawn believes there is a growing demand for e-cigarettes and other vaporizing products and is committed to providing education and information as well as products and services at the new store.

Donahue, who recently opened his store in Fair Lawn‘s Broadway District with his partner, Judy Goldstein, states clearly that vaping, as the use of the electronic cigarettes is commonly known, is not a smoking cessation remedy. It does, however, provide an alternative to the use of tobacco products without the harmful tars and chemicals.

“I worked in the construction industry for many years and smoked two packs of cigarettes a day,” Donahue pointed out. “After my doctor urged me to quit smoking I went through nicotine patches and gums, hypnosis and acupuncture with little success until I had my ‘eureka’ moment when I tried an e-cigarette.”

Introduced to the market six years ago, electronic cigarettes have a battery core that heats up an FDA-approved liquid solution, or “juice” as aficionados call it, that contains a mix of propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin, nicotine and food additives. The liquid, which comes in flavors like dragon berry, pumpkin chai, gummy bear and strawberry cheesecake, vaporizes creating the sensation of smoking and cloud-like puffs with no smell, no fire and no ash.

According to the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, sales are expected to reach nearly $2 billion in 2013 with up to 14 percent of the nearly 44 million U.S. tobacco users saying they have tried and/or use e-cigarettes. While advertisements for various e-cigarettes are common and seeing someone vaping is not unusual, the marketing pitch that you can do so anywhere at any time is a bit misleading. Vaping on planes, trains, buses and other forms of public transportation are generally banned. Most restaurants and bars (with some exceptions) also ban e-cigarettes, lumping them into the same category as regular cigarettes, cigars and pipes.

Because rules and regulations are still catching up to this fast-growing new trend, interested consumers need knowledgeable and helpful vaping experts to help them understand the different products available. That’s where Donahue and Good Karma Vapor fit in.

“There are so many products being introduced in this category that it can be difficult and even intimidating for people who are considering vaping as an alternative to smoking,” Donahue stated. “We offer basic products like simple starter kits for newcomers to vaping to more elaborate systems that can be customized to fit individual preferences as well as personalized service to help people learn how to use and maintain their vaporizers.”

Ike Van Vliet of Glen Rock hasn’t smoked a traditional cigarette in more than a year and says he owes the folks at Good Karma Vapor for helping him find a satisfying alternative that has helped him feel better and healthier than he has in a long time.

“There’s been a lot of focus on the concept of tobacco harm reduction and e-cigarettes have a role to play,” Donahue concluded. “It makes me happy to be able to help people who are trying to live healthier lives without smoking and for many vaping is a second chance.”

When asked what led Good Karma Vapor to Broadway, Goldstein noted that she and Dan live in Fair Lawn and are very familiar with the area.

“It has tremendous consumer traffic and that is fantastic for any business new or old,” Goldstein stated. “We are glad that our tax dollars will support our town, and love our three-minute commute!”
